tom tobinThe 7th Annual Adjunct Faculty Teaching & Learning Conference will feature keynote speaker, Dr. Thomas J. Tobin, Program Area Director for Distance Teaching & Learning on the Learning, Design, Development, & Innovation (LDDI) team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tom Tobin is an internationally-renowned author and speaker on issues of quality in teaching with technology, including evaluating online teaching, academic integrity, copyright, and accessibility. He holds a Ph.D. in English literature, a second master’s degree in information science, a professional project management certification, a master online teacher certification, the Quality Matters reviewer certification, and he recently completed the Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC) certification. He tells his nieces and nephews that he is in 42nd grade. He is the author of Evaluating Online Teaching: Implementing Best Practices, The Copyright Ninja, Going Alt-Ac, and Reach Everyone, Teach Everyone: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education.

His keynote is titled “Reach Everyone and Teach Everyone with Universal Design for Learning.” During this uniquely engaging keynote, Tom will share strategies for making student interactions more engaging and for increasing learner retention through practical design steps. He will also facilitate a workshop later in the conference titled “Expanding Learner Choices.” In this workshop Tom will help you to consider ways that you may increase student agency by providing multiple opportunities for them to engage with your course material and demonstrate their learning and achievement of course outcomes. This strategy is particularly effective for underserved student populations who may not be served effectively through traditional online instructional approaches.

During the conference we will also hear from three Harper adjunct faculty during a panel discussion facilitated by Dr. Michael Bates, Dean of Teaching, Learning, and Distance Education. Faiza Asghar, Cindy Miller, and J.T. White will reflect on their experiences during the rapid transition to online instruction and share the valuable lessons they have learned.

The conference will close with a fun, interactive session that you won’t want to miss! We hope you can join us and your fellow colleagues for an engaging conference!
