Pioneered at the University of Washington, Small Group Instructional Feedback (SGIF) is a voluntary, non-evaluative process for collecting feedback from your students on their experiences and perceptions of your course mid-way through the semester. Since 2019, Harper faculty have been using the SGIF process to great success in their classes.

In SGIF, a faculty peer conducts a 30-minute session in your class or distributes an online survey in which they ask your students to respond to five questions about your course: 1) What helps your learning? 2) What hinders your learning? 3) What can the instructor do to improve your learning? 4) What can you to do improve your learning? and 5) What increases (or could increase) your sense of belonging in the course? The peer will provide you with a confidential, written report of feedback collected, allowing you and your students an opportunity to make positive changes.

SGIF is available to all faculty, every semester without the need to attend a workshop. To participate in SGIF and earn 0.4 CEUs this semester, here are the steps to get started:

  • Identify a faculty partner and complete the SGIF Interest Form. If you don’t have a faculty partner identified, you can request one through the interest form. The Academy will reach out to you with resources and instructions. The deadline to submit your interest form for Spring 2024 courses is March 15 (February 2 for first 8-week courses).
  • Complete the SGIF process with your faculty partner in each other’s courses following the steps outlined on the SGIF webpage.
  • Submit the SGIF completion form by April 26, 2024.

Note: If you would like to request an SGIF session for a course but are not interested in CEUs, you can use the SGIF Interest Form to request an SGIF facilitator for your course.

Please direct questions about the SGIF process to Melissa Baysingar, Instructional Design Specialist at mbaysing@harpercollege.edu.
