Meet another one of our presenters, Dr. Travaris Harris, Dean of Student Affairs
Dr. Harris may share his passion for student development and advocacy as a dean now, but he served as a faculty counselor in Student Development at Harper for more than 11 years and coordinated the summer REACH Program serving at-risk students from underrepresented groups for 10 years. Dr. Harris was actively involved in the Faculty Senate and served in various leadership roles in the Center for Multicultural Learning, including the multicultural faculty fellowship program and success coaching initiatives. Dr. Harris has been instrumental in a multitude of innovative programs and student development courses as well as helping students navigate challenges related to personal issues, learning disabilities, educational planning, and academic probation, thus improving student success and persistence outcomes. Through his PechaKucha presentation (20 slides x 20 seconds), Dr. Harris will share his understanding of how faculty members can support at-risk students whose backgrounds and learning needs fall outside the majority culture’s primary ways of making meaning. His presentation will conclude with an opportunity for discussion in a style he would recommend for evening out participation among students with various levels of comfort with dominant discourse patterns.
