Explorer Series (Spring 2017)
Hands-on workshops that explore accessible tools to increase student engagement.
The Academy is excited to announce the Explorer Series, a set of four workshops that explore accessible tools to increase student engagement. Every workshop has two parts, and each part is offered twice (once in the morning, once in the evening). Workshops are open to all faculty and are hands-on, preparing faculty to implement demonstrated tools and strategies in their classrooms right away. Faculty who attend both parts of a workshop and present a project they’ve developed in the workshop at a Project Showcase can earn CEUs or a stipend (see details in Project Showcase below). Register for one or more workshops in the series today!
Bringing Your Classroom to Life with Microsoft Sway

Microsoft Sway allows you to create dynamic presentations and interactive materials using a simple drag-and-drop technique. Sway can be accessed on or off campus and Sway projects can be easily shared with students and colleagues. In this two-part workshop, you will discover various strategies for incorporating Sway into your classroom, learn best practices for using Sway to engage students, and get guided, hands-on time to begin your own Sway creations!

Exploring Collaboration and Interaction with Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote is not only for taking notes. It is an application for free-form information gathering and multi-user collaboration and interaction. This session will provide an exploration of what OneNote can do for you! Topics that will be covered include enhancement of instructional materials, features for collaboration, and productivity tips for managing your digital life.

Orchestrating Synchronous Sessions Using Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Blackboard Collaborate is a real-time video conferencing tool that lets you add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact. Collaborate with the Ultra experience opens right in your browser, so you don’t have to install any software to join a session.

The OSCQR (Open SUNY Course Quality Review) rubric is a free tool that supports continuous improvements to the quality and accessibility of online courses. If you’d like to utilize particular standards, or even the entire rubric, to review and refresh the design of your online or hybrid course, then come attend this two-part workshop!

Project Showcase

The Explorer Series Project Showcase is a chance for you to demonstrate the work you’ve completed in the workshops and to get inspired by the work of your peers. Come to the showcase prepared to give a 5-10 minute demonstration of your completed Sway, OneNote, Collaborate, or OSCQR project. The presentations are made to other attendees at the showcase and to staff from the Academy for Teaching Excellence in an environment that encourages feedback and support. In addition to feedback on your demonstrated project, you will come away from the showcase with a range of ideas on how the topics presented in the Explorer Series can be used in the classroom.
CEU (full-time faculty): 1.0*; Stipend (adjunct faculty): $50*
*To be awarded the CEU/stipend, participants must present during the showcase and have attended both parts of an Explorer workshop.
NOTE: Participants who attend both parts of more than one workshop and present a project for each workshop at the showcase can earn additional awards, for a maximum of 4.0 CEUs (full-time faculty) or $200 stipend (adjunct faculty).
