Visiting speaker Dr. Durene I. Wheeler, Associate Professor in the department of Educational Inquiry & Curriculum Studies at Northeastern Illinois University, explores two important questions in her upcoming webinar, Constructing Difference: Understanding the Role of Social Justice in Our Classrooms:
- What is Social Justice Education?
- How does Social Justice Education Relate to Teaching Practices?
In this webinar, Dr. Wheeler provides an introduction to faculty interested in creating a more socially just classroom. Through an examination of terminology and tenets of social justice as it relates to teaching and learning, participants will examine how faculty and student identities impact content, comprehension, and classroom climate. This webinar also serves as a preview to Dr. Wheeler’s Spring 2018 GEC, Constructing Curriculum: Critical Pedagogy and Social Justice in the Classroom.
This session will be run in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, and participants can join the session from on or off campus. A recording of the session will be available after the live session.

Presenter: Dr. Durene I. Wheeler
Dr. Wheeler is an Associate Professor at Northeastern Illinois University teaching in the department of Educational Inquiry & Curriculum Studies. She holds a Core faculty appointment in African & African American Studies (AFAM) along with Women’s & Gender Studies (WGS). Dr. Wheeler’s teaching and research interests include historical intersections of race, class, ability and gender in U.S. Education, practical application methods of critical race and feminist pedagogy, and training educators and parents how to create socially justice classrooms and school environments. Dr. Wheeler has presented at several National and Regional conferences on issues of intersectionality, pedagogy and praxis, and social justice in education. Currently, she is co-editor of the anthology Black Women’s Liberatory Pedagogies: Resistance, Transformation and Healing Within and Beyond the Academy addressing interdisciplinary pedagogy and practice of Black women in the community and academy.
