Cornerstone Series (Fall 2017)
Hands-on workshops exploring the foundations of a great classroom.
The Academy is excited to announce the Cornerstone Series, a set of four workshops that explore some of the cornerstones of engaging and effective face-to-face and online classrooms. Every workshop has two parts, and each part is offered twice (once in the morning, once in the evening). In addition, one of the workshops is offered fully online. Workshops are open to all faculty and are hands-on, preparing faculty to implement demonstrated tools and strategies in their classrooms right away. Faculty who attend both parts of a workshop (or fully complete the online workshop) and demonstrate an innovation they’ve made to their online or face-to-face classroom at a Series Showcase can earn CEUs or a stipend (see details in Cornerstone Series Showcase below). Enhancing Distance Course Design Using the OSCQR Rubric

- There is an online option available for this workshop: Monday, September 18 – Sunday, October 1. Access to course Blackboard Shell will open to registered faculty on Monday, September 18.
The OSCQR (Open SUNY Course Quality Review) rubric is a free tool that supports continuous improvements to the quality and accessibility of distance courses. During this workshop you will discover how to utilize the OSCQR rubric to review the design of your own online or hybrid course. You will also participate as a peer reviewer, utilizing the same rubric to review the design of another participant’s course, providing them with a unique perspective. Some work (completing full course reviews and making course modifications per feedback) will be completed outside of the workshop hours. Participating in this full workshop meets the requirement to become an official, Harper, peer reviewer (should you choose to do so).

Making the 4 Connections in Your Classroom

In 2010, in an effort to improve course dropout rates, Odessa College sought out the common thread between their courses which had the greatest student success. What they uncovered are four simple, yet effective practices that can increase your connection to your students and promote student success in your face-to-face or online classroom. This two-part workshop explores the “4 Connections” revealed in Odessa’s research and explores practical methods and tools for applying them in your own classroom.

Making an Impact with Collaborative Learning

Considered by the Association of American Colleges and Universities as a “high-impact teaching practice” (positively associated with student learning and retention), collaborative learning will kick face-to-face and online classroom activities and assignments into high gear. This two-part workshop will provide innovative examples of collaboration in the traditional and online classrooms, hands-on experience with different collaborative learning activities and methods, and a forum to propose and receive feedback on collaborative learning ideas for your own classroom.

Creating a Course Orientation with Blackboard Collaborate Ultra

Both online and face-to-face courses can benefit from a welcoming and informative course orientation. This two-part workshop will demonstrate how to hold a live, virtual orientation session in Blackboard Collaborate Ultra to get students engaged and focused in your course. It will also demonstrate how to create a recorded orientation using video, audio, and screencasting that gives students the flexibility to watch the orientation anytime and from any device. Blackboard Collaborate Ultra is a real-time video conferencing tool that lets you add files, share applications, and use a virtual whiteboard to interact. Collaborate with the Ultra experience opens right in your browser, so you don’t have to install any software to join a session.

Cornerstone Series Showcase

The Cornerstone Series Showcase is a chance for you to demonstrate innovations you have made in your face-to-face or online classroom, to get feedback on your innovations, and to get inspired by the work of your peers also presenting at the Showcase.
CEU (full-time faculty): 1.0*; Stipend (adjunct faculty): $50*
*To be awarded the CEU/stipend, participants must present during the showcase and have attended both parts of a Cornerstone Series workshop (or fully completed the online workshop). Participants who attend both parts of more than one workshop and present a project for each workshop at the showcase can earn additional awards, for a maximum of 4.0 CEUs (full-time faculty) or $200 stipend (adjunct faculty).
