On Friday, September 27, 2019 the Learning Assessment Committee and the Academy for Teaching Excellence held the 11th Annual Harper College Assessment Conference and Share Fair. More than 120 faculty and staff attended the conference. The event focused on student learning assessment, including the keynote address “Preserving Students’ ‘Mental Bandwidth’ to Increase Equity in Success” by Dr. Tina Bhargava, Associate Professor at Kent State University.

Dr. Bhargava discussed the challenges that contribute to decreasing students’ mental bandwidth and how this can affect students’ ability to be successful in college. Also highlighted was how it is important for educators to recognize these challenges and to find ways to mitigate their impact on student learning and the college experience. Dr. Bhargava also conducted a workshop which focused on how to align bandwidth demands with learning outcomes in the classroom.

The conference also included a variety of poster presentations representing the work of the Assessment Community of Practice as well as the work of the Learning Assessment Committee around general education outcomes assessment. View the posters and other photos from the conference.

Breakout sessions included presentations from faculty on topics such as Action Research, using Blackboard Collaborate for assessment, and how assessment is working to improve student learning in various courses and programs.
